India day event is hosted every year by the Indian Cultural Association (ICA) to celebrate Indian culture with a variety of entertainment programs and food stalls to engage the masses. It was a down and overcast morning and our neighbors were all well-known local restaurants as we set up our first ever ASHA Pdx booth at Pioneer Courthouse Square in Portland. Our stall was to sell mocktails made from fresh fruit and also has lassi( made fresh from yogurt). The proceeds from our sales will directly go to support our project Sandhya Sanwardhan Sanshta! The weather perked up and we picked up the first interested customers as we figured out how all the different blenders work. And we were reasonably well prepared with the fresh fruit (watermelons and pineapples) that were cut the night before and the recipes for mocktails perfected and printed out. As the day progressed, with the sunshine came hundreds of people not only willing to donate but genuinely curious about our effort and how the ASHA chapters work. We successfully sold out of one of drinks(De-lychee-ious) by early afternoon and were pleasantly surprised! There were also lessons learned which will only improve the way we do booths/stalls in the future. All the volunteers who were part of making this event a smash hit also had so much fun organizing it. We spread awareness and were delighted to see some previous Asha Portland volunteers of yester years show up excitedly at the booth. As a relatively new mushrooming chapter, we are grateful for all the support we received and will be in touch with all the people who have signed up for our mailing list shortly!
